12 Days of Homemade Christmas Retro Walnut Mouse

12 Days of Homemade Christmas Retro Walnut Mouse

I have very fond memories of one of the ornaments that hangs on my Moms tree: some little mice sleeping in walnut shells that my sister and I made when we were wee Girl Scouts.  I knew for sure I wanted to make some for my own tree, so I asked my Mom to send me a picture of them so I could re-create them.

Well...maybe my memory is failing or maybe I like to look at the world through rose-colored glasses, but apparently those cute, sweet little mice actually look like this:

Umm...not exactly how Id pictured them.
I mean, these guys have probably been around for almost twenty years, so theyre probably a little worse for wear. But I have a feeling that they were never quite what I remember anyway.

So this ornament is a little bit of an improvement, but the new version is definitely sweet and cute.

You will need
  • A walnut
  • A filbert (also known as a hazelnut)
  • Some fabric and felt scraps
  • A cotton ball
  • A sharpie
  • A rubber band
  • A hot glue gun
Start by cracking open a walnut.  You can feel free to eat the walnut.  Unless, of course, youre allergic to nuts.  In which case you might want to skip this ornament altogether.  Warning: this ornament contains nuts!

Next, get a filbert.  I guess these are actually called hazelnuts, but I only even knew them as filberts.  In fact, Ive always called my little mouse Philbert in honor of his head.  Anyway, get the nut.  Draw a face.

Then glue a cotton ball into the walnut shell.  Cut a chunk out of a rubber band for the tail and glue it to the bottom of the walnut shell.

Glue a scrap of cute Christmas fabric over the cotton ball to make a blanket.

Then put the filbert in place.

To make the hat, take a half-circle of felt...

...and glue it into a cone shape.

Glue on the hat, ears, and a loop of pretty thread, and Philbert will be ready for your tree!
