2 months with 2Degrees Data in Auckland Part 1

2 months with 2Degrees Data in Auckland Part 1

Back in the day, you dont really need a mobile number or mobile data when staying in a different city for an extended amount of time. However, since most companies, utilities, schools, and companies now require a local number to identify you, getting a local SIM is pretty much mandatory.

After signing up for the 2Degrees Carryover Combo in Auckland, I immediately tested data access while walking around a fairly limited area in Auckland during the course of my first month. I especially checked data access during time spent in Eden Park, Kingsland, Ponsonby, Mt Albert, City Centre, Britomart, Newmarket, Sandringham, and the airport area.

Note: The 2Degrees data service was tested using a Moto G4 Plus.

The good news is that you actually dont have to enable data on your smartphone to track your location in Google Maps. As long as you enabled offline access in Google Maps for Auckland, most mapping needs are available to you (excluding local transport of course).

Google Maps will "find" you even if you dont have data enabled on your smartphone in Auckland, with the only prerequisite being a) you have a SIM and b) you had data access briefly on arrival and launched Google Maps.

Auckland Offline maps are available for Google Maps.

In addition, during the daytime on a clear or slightly cloudy day, pulling up web pages and getting data for news apps and e-mail apps are reliable. Apps such as 360News, the official BBC app, Outlook, WeChat, Google+, Twitter, and other low data apps worked as expected.

On one desperate occasion while waiting for broadband to be installed at my lodgings, I used the Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot option on the Moto G4 Plus to allow my MacBook Air to open web pages. Surprisingly, data sharing was seamless, though I ended up burning through my prepaid data fairly quickly.
