12 Days of Homemade Christmas Hot Glue Icicles
12 Days of Homemade Christmas Hot Glue Icicles
Ive seen all kinds of clever things people have done with hot glue lately; theres hot glue snowflakes and hot glue snowmen. And I got to wondering what else I could make with hot glue.
One of my moms favorite Christmas movies is A Christmas Story, and we watch it at least once on Christmas day. So, icicles have always been an integral part of our holiday celebration. Because of that, I decided Id give hot glue icicles a go. And, with these, you probably wont shoot your eye out. Though, Id watch out for glitter if I were you.
You will need:
- Hot glue gun
- Hot glue
- Lollipop stick
- Toothpick
- Clear glue
- Glitter
Start by holding your lollipop stick in one hand and drizzling glue down it. Make sure you coat it all the way around, and make sure the glue drips all the way to the end. Dont blame me if you burn yourself. Maybe you should wear gloves.
Once your stick is coated, youll kind of have to swirl it around to prevent the glue from dripping off. This is kind of a challenge. Think of it like a game, where the goal is not to let any of the glue get off the stick.
But in addition to not letting the glue get off the stick, you also want more glue at the bottom of your stick (which will become the top of your icicle) than at the top to give it the right shape. So...just kind of swirl it around and tip it up and down. Youll get the hang of it.
Now, this next step, I didnt really get a picture of because it requires both hands, but Ill try to explain. You swirl the stick around trying to keep the glue on it for a minute or so (depending on how hot your glue gun is). Once the glue sort of starts to set up, get a toothpick. Start at the bottom, and draw a line in the glue, spiraling around the stick up to the top. Thats how you get the swirls you see above. I had time to redraw my line a couple of times before the glue was too hard to push around any more.
As you can see, I got better with more practice. The one on the left is the last one I did. The one on the right was the first one.
Once your glue has dried into a beautifully swirly icicle, you have to cut off the bottom of your stick (the part you used to hold while you drizzled the glue). After you cut it off, put a dab of glue on the cut end of your stick.
Now you get to play the swirling, keep-the-glue-on-the-stick game again while your drop of glue dries. You want it to dry as the tip of your icicle.
Next, glue a thread loop to the top of your icicle.
Your icicle should look more or less like one of these now.
Here was the destruction left over from my icicle-making adventure.
Next, I decided to add a little sparkle to my icicles. I spread clear craft glue on them, then sprinkled them with and/or rolled them in glitter. I had two types of glitter: regular and extra fine. The one in the front is the one with extra fine glitter; the two in the back had regular glitter. I preferred the fine glitter, but I wont hold it against you if you want to use regular glitter.
Also, feel free to be jealous of my super awesome blue speckled shower tiles from the 70s in the background. I know everyone wants them.
And there it is on the tree in all of its glittery and icicle-y goodness.
