Its Day 7, which means were more than half-way through the 12 Days of Homemade Christmas. Im actually kind of surprised I havent given up, but now theres a light at the end of the tunnel, and Im thinking that maybe - just maybe - Ill make it through all 12 days.
Today, weve got another classic from the trees of my childhood: the spoon Santa.
Youll need:
A spoon
Pliers
Peach paint
Sharpie
Some white felt, fleece or other fabric
Some red felt
Pom-pom ball
Hot glue gun
First, bend your spoon. This is the hardest part. Channel all of your He-Man (or He-Woman) strength. Or, go find a real He-Man, and make him do it for you. I muscled my way through by using two pairs of pliers and doing a lot of grunting and groaning. And a little swearing.
Also, in case you couldnt tell, this bend in the spoon is what creates the "hanger" for the ornament: You just hang the bend over your tree branch, and youre good to go.
Next, paint the back of your spoon a nice flesh tone.
Once your paint is dry, draw a face. Also, glue on a hat made out of red felt and a little fleece (or cotton batting if youre like me and dont have any fleece).
Next, add your beard and mustache. I had this odd, fuzzy fabric that worked perfectly as facial hair, but any white fabric should be good.
I decided he looked a little funny with no nose, so I glued a little black bead on for the nose. Its still a little funny, but I kinda like it.
And youre done! I think this would be a really cool way to use some family silverware thats not a complete set. You know, the kind of thing you want to save, but what are you going to do with just one or two spoons? Or just buy a package of four spoons for a buck at your local dollar store like I did...
